Best Humminbird Fish Finders: 5 Picks From PiranhaMAX to HELIX 7
Five Humminbird fish finders compared by sonar, GPS, and box contents, from the PiranhaMAX 4 DI to HELIX 7 MEGA imaging units and a HELIX 5 ice kit.
The best Humminbird fish finder for you depends on which part of the lineup fits your boat and your season. The five Humminbird units here fall into three groups: the PiranhaMAX 4 DI for basic down imaging, HELIX models that add GPS, a basemap, and (on the HELIX 7) MEGA imaging, and a HELIX 5 ice kit.
Our Best Overall is the HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3, a current Humminbird model that pairs GPS and a basemap with Dual Spectrum CHIRP sonar. Figures marked as Humminbird’s come from its help center and HELIX operations manual; the rest come from the Amazon listings.
This guide is general product information, not repair or electrical safety advice. Follow the installation, wiring, and charging instructions in your product’s manual, stop using any battery, charger, or electronics that overheat, swell, or smell of burning, and contact the manufacturer.

How We Chose
We started with Humminbird fish finders sold new on Amazon in the U.S. and read each full listing, including the box contents and model number. We then checked each model against Humminbird’s help center and HELIX operations manual. Humminbird lists the HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3, the HELIX 7 CHIRP MEGA DI GPS G4N (with and without a transducer), and the HELIX 7 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G4N among its current HELIX products and the ICE HELIX 5 CHIRP G3 among its current ICE products, and its PiranhaMAX series page says the PiranhaMAX 4 DI is one of two PiranhaMAX models still sold. For the MEGA SI, that match is by model name only: the kit’s model number on Amazon (411940-1) does not appear in Humminbird’s support documents, so check the box on arrival. Two of the five listings had owner reviews we could use; the other three entries rely on specifications alone.
Best Overall goes to the HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3. Under our published method it needs a strong owner rating with enough ratings behind it and a model its maker confirms is current. The PiranhaMAX 4 DI also qualifies, but it is already Best Overall in our down imaging fish finder guide, and we do not give the same model Best Overall in two guides. The other three units have too few owner ratings to reach our Best Overall threshold. After the Best Overall, the order follows a fixed rule: the PiranhaMAX (down imaging, no GPS), then the two HELIX 7 G4N units with MEGA imaging, the control head before the side imaging kit that includes its transducer; the ice kit comes last. The order is not a sort by AnglerTechLab Score. One score includes a 0.2 deduction: the MEGA SI kit’s listing gives 125 ft for MEGA Down Imaging, while Humminbird’s manual lists 75 ft with the included transducer. Scoring is explained on our How We Review page; we do not run our own product trials. More sonar coverage is in our fish finders section.

Humminbird Fish Finder Reviews
1. Humminbird HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3 (Best Overall)
Who it’s for: Anglers who fish several lakes or the coast and want GPS, charts, and their own contour maps without imaging they will not use.
Standout features: Think of this as a HELIX 7 without MEGA imaging. Per the listing, it shares the HELIX 7 mapping package: GPS, a Humminbird Basemap of 10,000+ lakes and continental U.S. coastlines, room for LakeMaster, CoastMaster, or Navionics cards, and AutoChart Live, which logs contours, bottom hardness, and vegetation for up to eight hours. What you give up is the picture: the sonar is Dual Spectrum CHIRP only, switchable between Wide and Narrow. It ships with an XNT 9 HW T transom transducer. Humminbird’s HELIX manual lists a 5 in, 800 x 480 pixel screen and a 10 to 20 VDC power input for this model, and Humminbird lists it among its current HELIX products.
- Pro: GPS, a basemap, and AutoChart Live mapping, per the listing.
- Con: 2D sonar only; the listing names no down or side imaging.
- Con: A 5 in screen, per Humminbird, against 7 in on the HELIX 7 units, so split views get tight.
Who should look elsewhere: To see brush and rock as a picture, the PiranhaMAX 4 DI adds Down Imaging (without GPS), and the two HELIX 7 units add MEGA imaging with GPS.
2. Humminbird PiranhaMAX 4 DI (Down Imaging, No GPS Listed)
Who it’s for: Kayak, pontoon, and small-boat anglers who want to see brush and rock under the boat and do not need GPS or maps.
Standout features: According to the Amazon listing, Down Imaging shows timber, brush, bridge pilings, and rock below the boat, and the dual beam sonar switches between a narrow beam for detail and a wide beam for coverage. The listing names Fish ID+, fish and depth alarms, and zoom, with a tilt and swivel mount and an XNT 9 DI T transom-mount transducer in the box. Humminbird’s naming guide describes the unit’s Down Imaging as non-CHIRP, and its accessory guide lists the XNT 9 DI T with Down Imaging beams at 455 and 800 kHz.
- Pro: Down Imaging and two sonar beams, per the listing.
- Con: No GPS or mapping named, so you cannot save a brush pile and drive back to it.
What owners say: Several owners call it simple to use, and two say the screen stays readable in bright or direct sun. Two use it on a kayak and one on a pontoon. One owner who runs regular sonar most of the time says the down imaging view has been hard to turn into a usable picture so far.
Who should look elsewhere: If you want to mark spots, step up to the HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3, our Best Overall. For imaging off the sides of the boat, only the HELIX 7 G4N MEGA SI here offers it. Our Humminbird Helix 5 review covers the GPS step-up in more detail.
3. Humminbird HELIX 7 G4N MEGA DI (Control Head Only)
Who it’s for: Boat owners with a compatible transducer who want a HELIX 7 that links to the rest of the boat.
Standout features: According to the Amazon listing, this HELIX 7 G4N runs MEGA Down Imaging to 125 ft below the boat, plus Dual Spectrum CHIRP, with the HELIX 5’s mapping package. Like the MEGA SI kit below, its listing names Ethernet ports, Bluetooth, built-in NMEA 2000, and integration with Minn Kota and Cannon products. What sets it apart is the box: the listing says “control head only, transducer not included,” and the box list stops at the head unit, power cable, mounting hardware, and gimbal bracket. HELIX 7 listings come in several versions, so check the included-components line and model number before you buy.
- Pro: Ethernet, Bluetooth, and NMEA 2000 named in the listing, for linking to other gear.
- Con: No transducer in the box; the listing names none, and Humminbird’s accessory guide lists the XNT 9 HW MDI 75 T for HELIX 7 MEGA Down Imaging models.
- Con: One owner reported a defective unit.
What owners say: One owner says it pairs well with a Minn Kota trolling motor; another says you need a separate chart card for it to work with a trolling motor and calls it an OK unit for basic display. Two say they run MEGA Live imaging on it, one at the bow and one on a networked setup with a second HELIX.
Who should look elsewhere: If you do not own a transducer, the HELIX 7 G4N MEGA SI ships with one and adds side imaging. If you do not need networking, the HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3 covers GPS and charts.
4. Humminbird HELIX 7 G4N MEGA SI (Side Imaging, Transducer Included)
Who it’s for: Anglers who idle along banks, docks, and flats and want to find brush and rock before they drive over it.
Standout features: Per Humminbird’s HELIX manual, MEGA Side Imaging covers 250 ft side to side (125 ft on either side of the boat) and MEGA Down Imaging reaches 75 ft below with the included transducer, alongside Dual Spectrum CHIRP; the Amazon listing gives 125 ft for both. It shares the control head version’s mapping and connectivity lines: GPS with the Humminbird Basemap, AutoChart Live, Ethernet ports, Bluetooth, built-in NMEA 2000, and Minn Kota and Cannon integration. The box list names an XNT 9 HW MSI 150 T transom-mount transducer and a gimbal mounting bracket (model 411940-1).
- Pro: Side and down imaging from one included transducer, per the listing.
- Pro: The same networking lines as the control head version, per the listing.
- Con: MEGA Down Imaging reaches 75 ft with this kit’s transducer, per Humminbird, against 125 ft for the control head paired with the XNT 9 HW MDI 75 T.
- Con: The box list names a transom-mount transducer and no trolling motor mount.
Who should look elsewhere: If you already own a compatible transducer, the G4N MEGA DI control head is the version without one; our Humminbird HELIX 7 review compares the two. On a kayak, the PiranhaMAX 4 DI is the unit two owners on its listing report using.
5. Humminbird HELIX 5 CHIRP G3 Ice Sonar System (Complete Ice Kit)
Who it’s for: Ice anglers who want a color screen with a flasher view in a kit ready to carry onto the ice.
Standout features: The listing’s box list covers the whole kit: an XI 9 1521 ice transducer on an 8 ft cable, an ICE shuttle, a 9 Ah battery and charger, and a portable bag (model 411720-1). On screen, the listing describes flasher, A-Scope, and zoom ice views on a full-color 5 in display, with Dual Spectrum CHIRP rated for 3/4 in target separation, CHIRP interference rejection for crowded ice, and a Jig Charge mode. Its feature list also says bundle options include an open-water transducer and mounts, but the box list names only the ice transducer, so confirm what ships. Humminbird’s HELIX manual lists a 5 in, 800 x 480 pixel screen for the ICE HELIX 5 CHIRP G3 and a 400 ft depth capability for the XI 9 1521 transducer.
- Pro: Battery, charger, shuttle, and ice transducer in one box, per the listing.
- Con: The listing says built-in GPS applies to “select models,” so GPS on this version is not confirmed.
- Con: The listing gives 12 lb but not whether that is the carry or shipping weight.
Amazon also carries an ICE H5 CHIRP GPS G3 listing (model 411730-1) with the same feature lines and box list and GPS in its title. Humminbird’s software update page lists 411730-1 as the ICE HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3 and does not list the 411720-1 number on this listing. We kept the listing with more owner ratings.
Who should look elsewhere: If you need GPS waypoints on the ice, this listing does not confirm GPS, so ask the seller or compare other makers’ ice kits. If you fish open water most of the year, a HELIX with a transom transducer fits better.
How to Choose the Best Humminbird Fish Finder
PiranhaMAX or HELIX
The PiranhaMAX 4 DI has no GPS or charts; the open-water HELIX listings add both, plus AutoChart Live. If you fish one small lake and only want to see what is under you, the PiranhaMAX is enough. If you want to save a brush pile, follow a contour, or fish water you do not know, start with a HELIX.
MEGA Down Imaging vs. MEGA Side Imaging
Down imaging draws a picture of what is directly below the boat; side imaging sweeps out to each side, which pays off when you scan long banks or flats. Per Humminbird’s HELIX manual, MEGA Down Imaging reaches 125 ft with the MDI transducer and 75 ft with the MEGA SI kit’s transducer, and MEGA Side Imaging covers 250 ft side to side (125 ft to each side). Humminbird’s documents give different 2D sonar depth figures, so we leave that number out. If the terms are new, our explainer on how a fish finder works covers 2D sonar and imaging.
Mapping and Screen Size
On small or unmapped water, AutoChart Live matters more than the basemap, since it builds contours, bottom hardness, and vegetation layers as you drive. The PiranhaMAX listing gives a 4.3 in screen, while Humminbird lists 5 in for the HELIX 5 and 7 in for the HELIX 7; a larger screen earns its space when you run split views. Our guide on how to read a fish finder screen walks through arches, bottom returns, and imaging views.
Ice Fishing
If most of your season is on hard water, our best ice fishing fish finder picks compare the Ice Sonar System with Garmin bundles, flashers, and castable sonar. If you are still weighing a flasher or an LCD fish finder, our comparison covers the trade-offs. For units from other makers, see our picks across all brands.
FAQ
Which Humminbird fish finder has GPS?
In this roundup, the HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3 and both HELIX 7 listings name GPS. The PiranhaMAX 4 DI names no GPS, and the Ice Sonar System listing says GPS applies to select models only.
What is the difference between MEGA Down Imaging and MEGA Side Imaging?
Down Imaging looks straight below the boat; Side Imaging also covers 250 ft side to side, per Humminbird, which the G4N MEGA SI listing gives as 125 ft on either side. With that kit’s transducer, Humminbird lists MEGA Down Imaging to 75 ft.
Is a Humminbird fish finder also a depth finder?
Yes. A Humminbird fish and depth finder is the same unit: it reads depth along with fish and structure. What separates these Humminbird models is the extras: GPS and charts on the HELIX models, MEGA imaging on the HELIX 7.
Can a Humminbird fish finder work with a Minn Kota trolling motor?
Of the five listings here, the two HELIX 7 G4N listings name Minn Kota and Cannon integration. One owner of the control head version says it pairs well with a Minn Kota. Humminbird’s compatibility chart lists Minn Kota motors with i-Pilot Link (such as Terrova, Ulterra, and PowerDrive) for both HELIX 7 G4N models, through an Ethernet adapter cable, so check your exact motor on that chart before you buy.
